  The question shouldn't be at what point is it okay to steal him. The question is when does it change from "stealing" to "rescuing"? Maybe there is a legitimate explanation for why this happened. There could be. Things happen. Regardless of the reason, if you found the cat suffering, it was only right to help it. And if the neighbor returns one day with that explanation, then maybe you give the cat back. For now, keeping the cat and helping it is the only right thing to do.

  Exactly. And whenever this happens – whenever you find out exactly what happened to your neighbor, we would love to get an update on the story. And an update on the kitty, please. We want to see how well this little cutie is doing in his new (possibly temporary, possibly furrever) home.
